This multicolour LED pool light is made by O'Ryan Industries, which sells it as the PoolStar 2500 (model SP2500); StarBurst 72S is the name of the LED module it contains. It runs on low-voltage 12 V AC, draws about 7.5 W and offers 9 colour modes, which you cycle through with a simple on/off switch. It is designed for in-ground pools, including vinyl-liner pools, and fits into a plastic dry niche that passes through the wall, in an opening of about 4 in. (about 10 cm).
Highlights
Description
The SP2500 lights the pool underwater, from the wall. O'Ryan Industries, a manufacturer based in Vancouver (Washington, USA), sells it as the PoolStar 2500; “StarBurst 72S” refers to its LED module, now in its 72S-3 version. This module produces 280 lm in a 120° beam. An integrated circuit manages its 9 colour modes: each time you quickly turn the light off and back on, it moves to the next mode. There is no controller or additional wiring to plan for, even to synchronize several lights.
It is designed for in-ground pools, including vinyl-liner pools. It is not a replacement bulb: it does not mount in a PAR56 niche or on the surface of the wall, but in its own O'Ryan dry niche, which is included. This plastic part passes through the wall in an opening of about 4 in. and is secured by a nut at the back. The light assembly, with its 5 in. (12.7 cm) clear faceplate, then screws into the niche.
Besides the supplied niche, a complete installation requires access to the back of the wall, a 120 V AC → 12 V AC power supply, a 3/4 in. conduit between the niche and that power supply, and a grounded receptacle protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). The SP2500 sold by AFI includes the light assembly, a separate 100 ft (30.5 m) cable to be connected, the niche, the gaskets and the installation tool; the power supply is not included.
The photo shows the light assembly alone: the niche, the gaskets and the tool used to tighten and loosen the light are also in the box. The power supply is not included; email us if you would like help choosing one.

Installation
O'Ryan does not publish an installation manual specific to the current version. Unless marked “AFI tip”, the points below come from the installation diagram in its 2024 catalogue and from its 2006 instructions for the former bulb version, which describe the same niche.
| Electrician | AFI tip: have the electrical connection done by a master electrician. O'Ryan's diagrams are American; in Quebec, the Quebec Construction Code, Chapter V – Electricity, applies. |
|---|---|
| Low voltage | The light connects to the 12 V AC from its power supply (120 V AC → 12 V AC transformer), never directly to 120 V. The 120 V thus stays at the power supply, away from the pool. |
| Power supply | Plugged into a grounded receptacle protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI), without an extension cord. Mounted with 2 screws, switch and cords facing down, with at least 1/4 in. (6.4 mm) of space between the enclosure and the mounting surface. |
| Power supply location | According to the O'Ryan diagram: at least 48 in. (1.2 m) from the pool, with the bottom of the power supply at least 12 in. (30 cm) above the water level. |
| Niche depth | Niche placed between 12 and 24 in. (30 to 61 cm) below the top of the pool, no deeper than 24 in., according to O'Ryan's 2006 instructions. |
| Opening | On a flat surface, about 4 in. (the instructions specify 3-7/8 in., or 9.8 cm). The niche nut is tightened behind the wall. AFI tip: plan for access to the back accordingly (pool under construction, panel wall before backfilling, or excavation). |
| Niche | Front part of the niche and its 5-1/2 in. gasket in the opening, bead of non-acid silicone between the wall and the nut, nut tightened to about 16 lb-ft (22 N·m), then rear part glued onto the front part. A 3/4 in. conduit connects the niche to the power supply. |
| Cable | Run through the conduit and held by the metal strain-relief clamp provided by O'Ryan. AFI tip: the 100 ft cable supplied is not attached to the light; your electrician connects it to the light assembly's lead. |
| Light assembly | 4-7/8 in. gasket coated with silicone lubricant, then light assembly screwed clockwise into the niche with the tool. |
The distances shown come from the manufacturer. In Quebec, the Quebec Construction Code, Chapter V – Electricity, may require different ones: have your electrician check them before installation.
Maintenance
The current light assembly has built-in LEDs (based on the manufacturer's photos): there is no longer a socket bulb to replace. To remove it from its niche, O'Ryan's 2006 instructions give the following procedure.
| 1. Turn off the power | Unplug the power supply. |
|---|---|
| 2. Lower the water | Lower the water level below the niche. |
| 3. Unscrew | Unscrew the light assembly counterclockwise with the tool. |
| 4. Reinstall | Check that the gasket is in place, screw the light assembly back in clockwise with the tool, then plug the power supply back in. |
Winterizing
O'Ryan does not publish winterizing instructions for this light. Here are our AFI tips.
| During the winter | Turn off the lighting circuit for the entire cold season and keep the power supply dry and sheltered. |
|---|---|
| Water level | Do not turn the light back on until the pool is filled to its normal level, and never turn it on if the water is below the light. |
| At pool opening | Check that each light works and that the colours are synchronized. If they are out of sync, cut the power for 5 seconds, then turn it back on: according to O'Ryan's 2005 StarBurst guide, the lights flash 4 times and return to white. |
| Gasket | If you remove the light assembly, check the condition of the gasket and relubricate it with a silicone lubricant. |
