Description

A pool heat pump does not heat with an electric element: it draws heat from the outside air using a refrigerant (R410A in the MI500), concentrates it with its compressor and transfers it to the pool water in a titanium heat exchanger. The electricity is mainly used to run the compressor and the fan. That is what the COP expresses: with a COP of 6.0 under AHRI reference conditions, the Moov Inverter MI500 delivers about six times more heat than the electricity it consumes. This efficiency drops as the air gets colder: with air at 10 °C (water at 26.7 °C, 63% humidity), it delivers 20,000 BTU/h with a COP of 4.1.

Like the entire Moov Inverter line, the MI500 uses Full-Inverter technology. A fixed-speed heat pump runs at full power until it reaches the set point, then stops and restarts. The MI500 instead modulates the speed of its compressor and fan between 20 and 100% of its capacity. Moov claims seasonal savings of 30 to 50% compared with a traditional heat pump. The set point can be adjusted from 18 to 40 °C on the unit's display or in the Moov Pool app; the manufacturer recommends 29.4 °C (85 °F).

The four Moov Inverter models offered by AFI share the same technology, the same titanium heat exchanger and the same warranty. They differ mainly in capacity, target pool volume and electrical circuit size; the MI1400 also has a top-mounted fan and 2 in. fittings.

Installation

Who installs itThe manufacturer requires installation by a pool professional; otherwise, the warranty is void. In Quebec, the electrical connection is handled by a master electrician.
ElectricalPermanent connection, no plug, grounding mandatory. 20 A breaker and 2 × 12 AWG cable up to 10 m, heavier gauge (thicker wire) beyond that. A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) is not required for operation; if code requires one, the manufacturer specifies a trip threshold of no more than 30 mA and warns that some GFCIs nuisance-trip with variable-speed equipment.
LocationOutdoors, in a well-ventilated area. Moov recommends not installing it under an overhang, deck or porch: the exhaust air would recirculate and performance would drop, to the point of shutting the unit down. Secure with M10 bolts to a concrete pad or to a sturdy, rust-protected support.
ClearancesAt least 1.5 m (59.1 in.) in front of the fan outlet, 0.7 m (27.6 in.) on each side, 0.5 m (19.7 in.) behind and above.
Plumbing connectionAfter the filter and before the water treatment system (chlorinator or salt chlorine generator), water inlet at the bottom and outlet at the top. The manufacturer's diagram calls for a three-valve bypass.
PipingRigid pipe required: the heat pump fittings cannot support the weight of flexible hose. No more than 10 m of pipe between the pool and the heat pump; insulated lines.
Water flowThe filtration pump must provide 83 to 117 L/min (21.9 to 30.9 US gal/min) while heating. With a variable-speed pump, program a speed that provides at least this flow. If the flow is too low, the heat pump goes into protection mode (code E3, lack of water, or E6, insufficient flow).
CondensateInsert the supplied drain fitting under the unit and connect a drain hose to it.
Start-upStart the filtration pump before the heat pump, and stop the heat pump before the pump. Smart mode for the initial heat-up.

The Moov warranty does not cover electrical wiring and applies only to the original installation. It starts on the date of purchase, or on the date of installation if installation is delayed and documented. Keep the installer's invoice.

Winterizing

In Quebec, the heat pump must be winterized when the pool is closed. The manufacturer requires you to cut the power and drain the heat exchanger as soon as the air drops below 3 °C: water freezing inside the unit can damage the titanium heat exchanger, and this damage is not covered by the warranty. Here is Moov's procedure, to be done after the filtration system has been shut off.

1. Cut the powerSwitch off the heat pump's breaker.
2. DrainUnscrew the water inlet and outlet fittings.
3. Dry the heat exchangerVacuum through the bottom line with a shop vacuum, or blow through the top line.
4. Antifreeze (optional)Pour the antifreeze through a funnel into the top line until it comes out of the bottom line. Seal the bottom line with an expansion plug, finish filling from the top, then plug the top line. AFI tip: use an antifreeze designed for pools, never automotive antifreeze.
5. CoverPut a cover over the unit, leaving room for some air to circulate.
MaintenanceClean the coil with household detergent or clean water, never with gasoline or thinner.

Frequently asked questions

How big a pool can it heat?Moov specifies it for pools of up to 52,000 L (14,000 US gal). That is an upper limit: the right model also depends on the type of pool (in-ground or above-ground), the climate, use of a solar cover, the target temperature and the swimming season. If your pool is close to this volume or you want to swim early in the spring, talk to us before choosing.
Why 46,000 BTU/h and not 50,000?The “50,000 BTU” in the name refers to the unit's commercial class. The capacity measured to the AHRI 1160 standard is 46,000 BTU/h (air and water at 26.7 °C, 80% humidity): that is the certified value, and the one we publish.
Is it suitable for a saltwater pool? The heat exchanger is titanium, and the manufacturer's diagram places the water treatment (chlorinator or salt chlorine generator) after the heat pump, on the return line to the pool. However, Moov does not publish any salinity limit.
Is it noisy? The manufacturer specifies a maximum of 50 dB(A) at 3 m (10 ft), and a Silence mode is available. Since the fan blows horizontally, point the air outlet away from the deck and the neighbours.
How much does it cost to run?It depends on the water volume, the target temperature, the weather, the length of the season and the use of a cover, which the manufacturer recommends during the heating season. For reference: power input ranges from 0.3 to 2.3 kW depending on demand (air and water at 26.7 °C), and each kilowatt-hour consumed delivers about 6 kilowatt-hours of heat under reference conditions, about 4 with air at 10 °C. Moov claims seasonal savings of 30 to 50% compared with a traditional heat pump.
How late in the season can it be used?It operates with air from 0 to 43 °C, but its capacity drops as the air gets colder: with air at 10 °C, it delivers 20,000 BTU/h, compared with 43,000 with air at 26.7 °C (water at 26.7 °C and 63% humidity in both cases), and heating up takes longer. Below 3 °C, the manufacturer requires it to be shut off and drained.
MI500 or MI650X: which one should I choose? The MI650X, a revision of the MI650, delivers an AHRI-certified 62,000 BTU/h and Moov specifies it for up to 68,000 L, compared with 46,000 BTU/h and 52,000 L for the MI500. It requires a 30 A breaker (2 × 10 AWG cable) instead of 20 A, and it is deeper (419 mm instead of 340 mm). If your pool is close to the MI500's limit, or if you want a long season, the MI650X will heat faster.
