This multicolour LED light is made by O'Ryan Industries, which sells it as the PoolStar 1000 (model SP1000); StarBurst 28S is the name of the LED module it contains. It runs on low-voltage 12 V AC, draws about 2.4 W and offers 9 colour modes, which you cycle through with a simple on/off switch. It is the small-niche model in the PoolStar line: designed for in-ground spas and pools, it fits into a plastic dry niche that passes through the wall, in an opening of about 3 in. (about 7.5 cm), and its installation requires access to the back of the wall. AFI sells it with its niche, gaskets and installation tool, but with no cable or power supply.
Highlights
Description
The SP1000 lights the pool or spa underwater, from the wall. O'Ryan Industries, a manufacturer based in Vancouver (Washington, USA), sells it as the PoolStar 1000; “StarBurst 28S” refers to its LED module, now in its 28S-3 version. This module produces 113 lm in a 120° beam. An integrated circuit manages its 9 colour modes: each time you quickly turn the light off and back on, it moves to the next mode. No controller or additional wiring is needed to synchronize several lights.
O'Ryan presents it both as a spa light and as an in-ground pool light; it differs from the SP2500 mainly in its smaller size, and illuminates about 150 sq. ft (14 m²) per light. It is not a replacement bulb: it does not mount in a PAR56 niche or on the surface of the wall, but in its own O'Ryan dry niche, which is included. This plastic part passes through the wall in an opening of about 3 in. and is secured by a nut at the back. The light assembly, whose clear faceplate measures 3-5/8 in. (9.2 cm) according to the 2024 O'Ryan catalogue, then screws into the niche.
Besides the supplied niche, a complete installation requires access to the back of the wall, a 120 V AC → 12 V AC power supply, a conduit between the niche and that power supply, a low-voltage cable to link the light's lead to the power supply, and a connection between that cable and that lead, in an enclosure and at a location that comply with the Code. The SP1000 sold by AFI includes the light assembly, the niche, the gaskets and the installation tool. Unlike our SP2500, which comes with 100 ft (30.5 m) of cable, it is sold without cable, and the power supply is not included.
The main photo shows the light assembly alone: the niche, the gaskets and the tool used to tighten and loosen the light are also in the box. The black wire coming out of its cable gland is the light's lead: this is where the low-voltage cable (not included) connects. O'Ryan does not publish the length of this lead. O'Ryan supplies the low-voltage cable with its power supply: 70 ft (21.3 m) as standard, or a custom length. Email us before ordering: we will tell you which power supply and which cable to plan for, based on your installation.

Installation
O'Ryan does not publish installation instructions for the SP1000. Unless marked “AFI tip”, the points below come from the parts list and exploded views in its 2024 catalogue, and from the explanations it used to give about the PoolStar line.
| Electrician | AFI tip: have the electrical connection done by a master electrician. O'Ryan's documents are American; in Quebec, the Quebec Construction Code, Chapter V – Electricity, applies. |
|---|---|
| Low voltage | The light connects to the 12 V AC from its power supply (120 V AC → 12 V AC transformer), never directly to 120 V. The 120 V thus stops at the power supply; on the water side, the light receives only 12 V. |
| Power supply | Not included. AFI tip: plug it into a grounded receptacle protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI), without an extension cord, as O'Ryan requires for the SP2500, and follow the instructions supplied with your chosen power supply regarding its mounting and location. |
| Opening | The opening is drilled in a flat surface of the wall and measures about 3 in. according to the manufacturer, whose documents do not all give the same dimension. AFI tip: first measure the front part of the niche you receive, then drill. The niche nut is tightened behind the wall: you therefore need access to the back (spa or pool under construction, or accessible wall). |
| Niche | The front part of the niche and its 4-3/16 in. gasket go into the opening, from the pool or spa side. The nut is tightened at the back of the wall, then the rear part is mounted on the back of the front part. |
| Curved wall | According to O'Ryan, a compensator ring is fitted on the outer side of the wall: it spreads the pressure on the niche and keeps it from cracking. |
| Sealing | According to O'Ryan, the ribbed gaskets are coated with a non-acid silicone lubricant. |
| Conduit and lead | The light's lead comes out through the back of the niche. In its SP1000 VL and SP2500 kits, O'Ryan provides a metal strain-relief clamp to tighten onto this lead. According to its 2006 instructions for the SP2500, a conduit runs from the back of the niche to the power supply. AFI tip: your electrician determines its type and routing according to the Code. |
| Connection | In these same kits, O'Ryan provides wire nuts for the electrical connection, without specifying where it is made. AFI tip: since the low-voltage cable is not included, your master electrician approves it and connects it to the light's lead, in an enclosure and at a location that comply with the Code. |
| Light assembly | The light assembly gasket is coated with silicone lubricant, then the light assembly is screwed into the niche with the supplied tool. |
For the SP1000, O'Ryan publishes no consistent drilling dimension, no tightening torque and no installation distances. The applicable rules are those of the Quebec Construction Code, Chapter V – Electricity: your electrician checks them before installation.
Maintenance
The current light assembly has built-in LEDs (based on the manufacturer's photos): there is no longer a bulb to replace. O'Ryan does not publish a removal procedure for the SP1000; for the SP2500 in the same line, mounted in the same type of dry niche, O'Ryan's 2006 instructions give the following procedure.
| 1. Turn off the power | Unplug the power supply. |
|---|---|
| 2. Lower the water | Lower the water level below the niche. |
| 3. Unscrew | Unscrew the light assembly counterclockwise with the tool. |
| 4. Reinstall | Check that the gasket is in place, screw the light assembly back in clockwise with the tool, then plug the power supply back in. |
Winterizing
O'Ryan does not publish winterizing instructions for this light. Here are our AFI tips if your pool or spa is closed for the winter.
| While closed | Turn off the lighting circuit as long as the pool or spa is closed, and keep the power supply dry and sheltered. |
|---|---|
| Water level | Do not turn the light back on until the pool or spa is filled to its normal level, and never turn it on if the water is below the light. |
| At season opening | Check that each light works and that the colours are synchronized. If they are out of sync, cut the power for about 5 seconds, then turn it back on: according to O'Ryan's 2005 StarBurst guide, the lights flash 4 times and return to white. |
| Gasket | If you remove the light assembly, check the condition of the gasket and relubricate it with a silicone lubricant. |
