A 50,000 BTU/h pool heat pump from TTI FAB, a manufacturer based in Longueuil, for heating the water of an above-ground or in-ground pool. It draws heat from the outdoor air and transfers it to the water through a titanium heat exchanger, which is suitable for saltwater pools when the chlorinator is installed after the heat pump. It uses a fixed-speed compressor on a 240 V power supply protected by a 20 A breaker, and is adjusted with a digital control that has a built-in timer. It is the smallest Stratos model offered by Aqua Fibre Innovation.
Highlights
Description
A pool heat pump does not heat the water with an electric element: it draws heat from the outdoor air. The fan moves air over the evaporator coil, the compressor concentrates that heat in the refrigerant (R410A), then the titanium heat exchanger transfers it to the pool water. It therefore delivers more energy as heat than it consumes in electricity, which is what the coefficient of performance (COP) measures. According to the TTI spec sheet, the Stratos-50 reaches a COP of 6.1 with air at 26.7 °C and 80% humidity, and 4.0 with air at 10 °C and 63% humidity (water at 26.7 °C in both cases).
The Stratos-50 is a simple unit: a fixed-speed compressor, a single-phase 240 V power supply and a digital panel with clock and timer. It is designed to operate with air between 7 and 35 °C; below 7 °C, it shuts off on its own and displays code P7, which is not a malfunction. A solar cover or insulating cover, which TTI recommends, helps keep the heat produced in the pool.
The pool sizes indicated by TTI are listed in the frequently asked questions below. For a larger pool, a property exposed to wind or a longer swimming season, the Stratos-65 (65,000 BTU) and the Stratos-80 (80,000 BTU) offer more power. If in doubt, call us before ordering.

Values from the TTI spec sheet, for water at 26.7 °C (80 °F). According to TTI, BTU and COP are calculated to the AHRI 1160 test standard, and BTU with a test flow of 60 US gal/min. When installing, stay within the flow range shown in the table.
Installation
| Electrical | Connection by a master electrician, in accordance with the applicable codes: dedicated 240 V circuit, 20 A breaker installed near the unit in an accessible location, grounding mandatory. The exact requirements are shown on the nameplate. |
|---|---|
| Location | Outdoors only, never in a shed, garage or basement. On a flat, firm and level surface, ideally a concrete slab. Not under a roof (snow, water running off without a gutter) or near an automatic sprinkler, and out of direct sunlight on the control panel. |
| Clearances | 60 cm (2 ft) in front of the evaporator coil; 120 cm (4 ft) in front of the other sides, the fan and the service panel. |
| Condensation | The unit produces condensation water: make sure there is good drainage around it. |
| Plumbing | 1 ½ in. connections. A set of bypass valves is mandatory to isolate the heat pump and adjust the flow. With a pump of 2 HP or more, TTI requires an adjustable automatic bypass valve. |
| Pipe length | 10 m (about 33 ft) maximum between the pool and the unit. TTI recommends insulating these pipes to maximize water heating. |
| Flow and pressure | Between 57 and 170 L/min (15 to 45 US gal/min), at 30 PSI maximum. Outside these values, damage is not covered by the warranty. |
| Chlorinator and salt chlorine generator | The outlet of any salt chlorinator or chlorine or bromine feeder must be located after the heat pump. Otherwise, the warranty does not apply. |
| Start-up | Start the filtration pump before the heat pump. The fan runs for 3 minutes before the compressor starts. |
TTI requires the unit to be installed and serviced by a professional technician. Incorrect installation is not covered by the warranty, and a repair made by a technician not authorized by TTI voids it. Remember to register your warranty online on the TTI website.
Winterizing and maintenance
In Quebec, the heat pump must be winterized when the pool is closed: water left in the heat exchanger can freeze and damage it, and freezing is not covered by the warranty. TTI describes the following steps:
| 1. Stop | Turn off the heat pump. |
|---|---|
| 2. Cut the power | Switch off the breaker and close the valves. |
| 3. Disconnect the water | Unscrew the water inlet and outlet connections. |
| 4. Drain | Rinse the heat exchanger with tap water, then blow out the remaining water with compressed air or a wet/dry vacuum. |
| 5. Protect | If the unit stays outside all winter, cover it with a waterproof protective cover. |
In spring: check and adjust the water quality, keep the breaker off while you reinstall the unit level and reconnect the plumbing, clean the filter and check the water return, then restore power. Always start the filtration before the heat pump.
During the season, keep the coil free of leaves and paper. Clean the unit with a mild household cleaner and rinse it with a garden hose at low pressure, never with a solvent or gasoline.

For water flow, rely on the TTI warranty range rather than on the table in this spec sheet: 57 to 170 L/min (15 to 45 US gal/min). On TTI's Documentation page, the Stratos manuals are sorted by edition (2026, 2020, 2018, 2017 and an older edition). To find out which one matches your unit, email or call us with the information on its nameplate.
