Description

A pool heat pump burns no fuel: it captures heat from the outside air. The fan moves the air across a coil filled with circulating refrigerant, the compressor concentrates that heat, then the titanium heat exchanger transfers it to the pool water flowing through it. That is why it delivers several units of heat for each unit of electricity consumed (the COP), and why its output drops as the air gets cooler: according to TTI, in high mode the Stratos 65 Inverter goes from 60,300 BTU/h with air at 26.7 °C to 41,000 BTU/h with air at 10 °C (water at 26.7 °C and 63% humidity in both cases). It is designed to heat pool water; TTI publishes no cooling capacity for this model.

What sets this model apart is its variable-speed inverter compressor. A fixed-speed model, such as the Stratos-50, always heats at the same output, cycling on and off. The Stratos 65 Inverter offers three modes: high mode delivers maximum output, useful for raising the water temperature, while normal and silent modes heat more slowly, but with a better COP, meaning less electricity for each unit of heat produced. The control panel includes a timer.

In the Stratos range offered by AFI, the Stratos 65 Inverter is the mid-range model: it sits between the Stratos-50 (50,000 BTU nominal, fixed speed) and the Stratos-80 (80,000 BTU nominal), designed for the largest pools. The right choice among the three depends mainly on the pool's volume, the target temperature, its exposure to wind and whether it has a cover: email us for sizing. TTI FAB states that its heat pumps are designed and manufactured in Quebec.

Manufacturer's values (Stratos Inverter 2027 spec sheet and 2026 manual), calculated to the AHRI 1160 standard according to TTI. The 26.7 °C corresponds to the 80 °F in the TTI documents. The COP (coefficient of performance) is the ratio between the heat delivered to the water and the electricity consumed. The 65,000 BTU corresponds to the model designation: the highest output published by TTI is 64,000 BTU/h.

These specifications are those of the Stratos 65 Inverter, the only 65,000 BTU Stratos in the TTI 2026-2027 catalogue. The exact electrical requirements are shown on the unit's nameplate: that is what your electrician must go by. TTI asks you to register the warranty online.

Installation

ElectricalDedicated 240 V circuit, connected by a master electrician in accordance with applicable codes, with grounding. The breaker is installed near the unit, in an accessible location; its rating is shown on the nameplate.
LocationOutdoors only: never in a shed, garage or basement. Not under a roof (risk of being buried under snow, or too much water without a gutter) or near a sprinkler. Keep direct sunlight off the controller: the display becomes hard to read.
Clearances60 cm (2 ft) in front of the evaporator coil; 120 cm (4 ft) in front of the fan, the service panel and the other sides.
BaseFlat, firm and level surface, preferably a concrete slab. The unit produces condensation water: make sure there is good drainage around it.
Plumbing connection1½ in. fittings. A set of valves (bypass) must allow the heat pump to be isolated and the flow to be adjusted; the bypass valve stays closed during operation. With a pump of 2 HP or more, TTI requires an adjustable automatic bypass valve.
Chlorinator and chemicalsAny chlorine or bromine feeder and any salt chlorinator must be installed after the heat pump. Otherwise, according to TTI, the heat pump warranty is void.
Flow and pressure57 to 170 L/min (15 to 45 US gal/min), 12 to 15 PSI, 30 PSI maximum. Outside these values, damage is not covered by the warranty.
Piping10 m (about 33 ft) maximum between the pool and the unit; insulate the pipes.
Start-upStart the filtration pump before the heat pump. The fan runs for 3 minutes before the compressor starts.
Large poolsTwo units can be connected in parallel, at least 2 ft (about 60 cm) apart.

TTI specifies that the unit must be installed and serviced by a professional technician, and its limited warranty excludes damage caused by improper installation. Email us before ordering if you have any doubt about your pump's flow rate or your electrical panel's capacity.

Winterizing

In Quebec, drain the heat pump before the first frost, at the latest when you close the pool (AFI tip): water left in the heat exchanger can freeze, and freeze damage is not covered by the warranty. Here are the steps from the TTI manual:

1. Turn off the unitSwitch off the heat pump.
2. Cut the powerSwitch off the breaker and close the valves.
3. Disconnect the plumbingUnscrew the water inlet and outlet fittings.
4. Drain the heat exchangerRinse it with tap water, then clear out the remaining water with compressed air or a wet/dry vacuum.
5. Protect the unitIf it stays outside all winter, cover it with a waterproof protective tarp.

In spring: check and adjust the water quality, make sure the breaker is switched off, set the unit level and reconnect the plumbing, clean the filter and check the water return, then switch the breaker back on. During the season, keep the coil free of leaves and debris; clean it with a mild cleaner and rinse it with a garden hose at low pressure, without solvent or gasoline.

Frequently asked questions

What size pool can it heat?TTI does not publish pool sizes for the Stratos 65 Inverter. The right model depends on the water volume, the desired temperature, the swimming season, exposure to wind and whether you have a cover. Send us your pool's dimensions and depth: we'll tell you whether the Stratos 65 Inverter is suitable or whether the Stratos-50 or the Stratos-80 is a better choice. For very large pools, TTI also provides for connecting two units in parallel.
Is it compatible with a saltwater pool?Yes, its heat exchanger is titanium. However, the salt chlorinator, like any chlorine or bromine feeder, must be installed after the heat pump in the circuit: otherwise, TTI considers the warranty void.
Is it noisy?TTI states 38 to 50 dB measured 3 m from the unit, without specifying the weighting. A silent mode is available; it delivers less heat (26,000 BTU/h versus 64,000 in high mode, air and water at 26.7 °C, humidity 80%, according to TTI).
How much does it cost to run?It depends on the price of electricity, the air temperature, the target temperature, the number of heating hours and the pool's heat losses: we can't give a reliable figure without knowing your setup. The COP gives an idea of efficiency: with air and water at 26.7 °C (humidity 80%), TTI states a COP of 5.5 in high mode and 10.5 in silent mode, or 5.5 to 10.5 units of heat per unit of electricity. With air at 10 °C (water at 26.7 °C, humidity 63%, according to TTI), it drops to between 3.8 and 5.0. An insulating cover or a solar cover, which TTI recommends, reduces heat loss.
At what temperatures does it work in spring and fall?According to the TTI 2026 manual, it is designed to operate with air between 7 and 35 °C (45 to 95 °F), and it shuts off automatically in excessively cold weather: this is a protective feature, not a malfunction. The cooler the air, the less heat it produces: 41,000 BTU/h in high mode with air at 10 °C (water at 26.7 °C, humidity 63%, according to TTI). At the start and end of the season, a cover helps retain heat.
How does it differ from the Stratos-50 and the Stratos-80?The Stratos-50 is a fixed-speed model with a nominal capacity of 50,000 BTU: it always heats at the same output, cycling on and off. The Stratos 65 Inverter adds the inverter compressor and its three modes, for 65,000 BTU nominal. The Stratos-80, with a nominal capacity of 80,000 BTU, is aimed at the largest pools. If you're unsure between two sizes, email us with your pool's dimensions.
Does it work with a variable-speed pump?Yes. According to TTI, it is designed to operate at reduced flow with modern circulation pumps. However, the flow through it must remain at least 57 L/min (15 US gal/min), even at low speed: below that, damage is not covered by the warranty. Always start the filtration pump before the heat pump.
