The Stratos-80 is a pool heat pump rated at 80,000 BTU/h by TTI, the largest of the three Stratos models offered by AFI. From Quebec manufacturer TTI FAB, based in Longueuil, it heats the water of in-ground and above-ground pools with a titanium heat exchanger, and is compatible with a saltwater pool provided the salt chlorine generator's outlet is placed after the heat pump. It runs on a 240 V circuit, uses 1½ in. water connections, defrosts automatically and, in Quebec, is covered by a TTI warranty of 6 years on parts and labour for a purchase made on or after October 5, 2026.
Key features
Description
A pool heat pump does not create heat: it draws it from the outside air. Its fan moves air over a coil carrying refrigerant, the compressor concentrates that heat, then the titanium heat exchanger transfers it to the pool water flowing through the unit. According to TTI's data, it thus delivers several times more heat than the electricity it consumes, but its efficiency drops markedly as the air gets cooler: it performs best in mild weather, with a cover on the pool at night, as TTI recommends. The Stratos only heats: it has no cooling mode.
The Stratos-80 is the largest of the three Stratos models offered by AFI, whose nominal capacities are 50,000, 65,000 and 80,000 BTU/h. For the same pool, a higher capacity raises the water temperature faster: this is the model to consider for a large in-ground pool, a pool exposed to wind or extended swimming in spring and September. For a very large pool, TTI also provides for connecting two units in parallel.
Like the other Stratos models, it uses 1½ in. connections, the same water flow range and a dedicated 240 V circuit. Its breaker rating is shown on the nameplate: we confirm it for you before purchase so your electrician can plan the connection. TTI states that its performance figures (BTU and COP) are calculated according to the AHRI 1160 test standard.
Technical specifications
| Brand and line | TTI FAB (Longueuil, Quebec), Stratos line |
|---|---|
| Nominal capacity | 80,000 BTU/h (about 23.4 kW), manufacturer's rating |
| Function | Water heating only, no cooling mode |
| Heat exchanger | Titanium |
| Power supply | 240 V, single-phase, 60 Hz |
| Breaker | Dedicated circuit; rating shown on the nameplate (we confirm it for you before purchase) |
| Water flow | 57 to 170 L/min (15 to 45 US gal/min); outside this range, damage is not covered by the warranty |
| Water pressure | 12 to 15 PSI in normal operation, 30 PSI (2 bar) maximum |
| Water connections | 1½ in. |
| Air temperature | Designed to operate from 7 to 35 °C (45 to 95 °F), according to the TTI manual |
| Defrost | Automatic |
| Protections | High or low water pressure detection, automatic shutdown when it is too cold, delay of 3 minutes before the compressor starts |
| Power outage | Automatic restart |
| Controls | Control panel: temperature, clock, on and off timer, °C or °F |
| Pool type | In-ground or above-ground |
| Test standard | Performance (BTU and COP) calculated to the AHRI 1160 standard, according to TTI |
| TTI warranty | Quebec residents: 6 years parts and labour, from the delivery date, for a new heat pump purchased on or after October 5, 2026. Elsewhere in Canada: 5 years on parts, 3 years on the electronic circuit and digital control, 3 years labour. |
Installation
| Electrical | Dedicated 240 V circuit, connected by a master electrician in accordance with applicable codes, with grounding. The breaker must be installed near the unit, in an accessible location; its rating is shown on the nameplate. |
|---|---|
| Location | Outdoors only, never in a shed, garage or basement. Not under a roof (risk of being buried under snow, or too much water without an eavestrough), away from automatic sprinklers, with the control panel out of direct sunlight. |
| Clearances | 60 cm (2 ft) in front of the evaporator coil; 120 cm (4 ft) in front of the other sides, the fan and the service panel. |
| Base | Flat, firm and level surface, preferably a concrete slab. The unit produces condensation: allow for water to drain away around it. |
| Plumbing | 1½ in. connections. According to the basic plumbing diagram in the TTI manual, the heat pump connects after the pump and filter, and before the chlorinator or salt chlorine generator. A set of bypass valves must make it possible to isolate the heat pump and adjust the flow so that it stays between 57 and 170 L/min. With a pump of 2 HP or more, TTI requires an adjustable automatic bypass valve. |
| Pipe length | Connecting pipes of 10 m (33 ft) or less between the pool and the unit, insulated to limit heat loss. |
| Chemicals | The outlet of the chlorinator, brominator or salt chlorine generator must be after the heat pump. Otherwise, according to TTI, the warranty is void. |
| Flow and pressure | 57 to 170 L/min (15 to 45 US gal/min), pressure of 12 to 15 PSI, 30 PSI (2 bar) maximum. |
| Two units | Parallel connection possible for a large pool, with at least 60 cm (2 ft) between the units. |
| Start-up | Start the filtration pump before the heat pump. The fan runs for 3 minutes before the compressor starts. |
According to TTI, the unit must be installed and serviced by a professional technician. The TTI limited warranty does not cover incorrect installation, nor flow or pressure outside the limits above. Free service is offered within 100 km of the point of sale, and a repair by a technician not approved by TTI voids the warranty.
Winterizing
In Quebec, the heat pump must be winterized when the pool is closed: water left in the heat exchanger can freeze and damage it, and freeze damage is not covered by the TTI warranty. Here are the steps from the TTI manual.
| Shutdown | Turn off the heat pump, switch off the breaker and close the valves. |
|---|---|
| Draining | Unscrew the water inlet and outlet fittings, rinse the heat exchanger (called the condenser in the manual) with tap water, then drain it with compressed air or by vacuum. A wet/dry vacuum can remove any remaining water. |
| Protection | If the unit stays outside all winter, cover it with a waterproof protective cover. |
| Maintenance | Keep the coil free of leaves and paper. Clean it with a mild cleaner and rinse it with a hose at low pressure, never with a solvent or gasoline. |
| Restart | Check and adjust the water quality, make sure the breaker is off, install the unit level and connect the plumbing, clean the filter and check the water return, then switch the breaker back on. Start the filtration pump before the heat pump. |
