Description

A pool heat pump does not heat the water with an electric element: it captures heat from the outside air and transfers it to the water in its heat exchanger. The COP (coefficient of performance) measures this efficiency. With a COP of 5.7, the Moov Inverter MI650X delivers about 5.7 kWh of heat to the water for every 1 kWh of electricity consumed, under certification conditions (air and water at 26.7 °C, 80% humidity). Efficiency drops as the air gets cooler: with air at 10 °C (63% humidity), its certified capacity falls to 27,000 BTU/h and its COP to 4.2. The manufacturer also recommends keeping the pool covered during the heating season.

What sets this model apart from a traditional heat pump is Full Inverter technology: the dual-rotor DC compressor (according to Moov) and the fan are variable-speed, and capacity modulates from 20 to 100%. Moov claims 30 to 50% seasonal savings compared with a traditional heat pump. The MI650X is the current revision of the MI650: it keeps the side-fan format (horizontal discharge) and the ABS housing of the smaller models in the range, for a footprint of 960 × 419 mm.

At AFI, the Moov Inverter range comes in four sizes: the MI500 (46,000 BTU/h, pools up to 52,000 L, 20 A breaker), the MI650X featured here (62,000 BTU/h, up to 68,000 L, 30 A), the MI900 (82,000 BTU/h, up to 105,000 L, 30 A) and the MI1400 (135,000 BTU/h, up to 155,000 L, 50 A). Capacities are AHRI-certified values with air and water at 26.7 °C and 80% humidity; volumes are the maximums specified by the manufacturer.

Installation

Who installs itThe manufacturer requires installation by a pool professional; otherwise, the warranty is void. In Quebec, the electrical connection is made by a master electrician.
Electrical connectionPermanent, with no plug: the heat pump is never plugged into an outlet. Grounding is mandatory. 208-230 V circuit protected by a 30 A breaker or fuse, supplied by the customer.
Power cable2 × 10 AWG plus ground, up to 10 m. Beyond that, use a heavier gauge (thicker wire).
Ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI)According to Moov, the unit does not need one to operate. If code requires one, its trip threshold must be 30 mA or less. Some GFCIs cause nuisance tripping with variable-speed equipment.
LocationOutdoors, in a well-ventilated spot with enough room for installation and servicing, never in an enclosed or poorly ventilated space. Exhaust air must not be drawn back in; otherwise, efficiency drops, or the unit may even shut down. If there is a structure above the unit, the manufacturer's diagram calls for at least 0.5 m (19.7 in.) of clearance.
BaseSecured with M10 bolts to a solid concrete base, or to a sturdy rust-treated stand.
ClearancesAt least 1.5 m (59.1 in.) in front of the fan outlet, 0.7 m (27.6 in.) on each side, 0.5 m (19.7 in.) behind and above.
Connection orderPump, filter, heat pump (water inlet at the bottom, outlet at the top), then chlorine feeder or salt chlorine generator, then return to the pool. The manufacturer's diagram includes a three-valve bypass.
PipingRigid pipe is mandatory: the heat pump's fittings cannot support the weight of flexible hose. No more than 10 m of pipe between the pool and the heat pump, with insulated lines.
Water flowThe filter pump must deliver 108 to 142 L/min (28.5 to 37.5 US gal/min) during heating, with a maximum head of at least 10 m. With a variable-speed pump, choose a speed that maintains this flow; otherwise, the heat pump displays a low water or flow error (E3 or E6).
CondensateInsert the supplied drain fitting under the unit and connect a drain hose to it.
Start-upStart the filter pump before the heat pump, and stop the heat pump before the pump. Use Smart mode for the initial heat-up.

The Moov warranty does not cover electrical wiring. It begins on the date of purchase (or on the installation date if installation is deferred, with proof) and applies only to the first installation.

Winterizing

The manufacturer's instruction is clear: as soon as the air drops below 3 °C, switch off the power and drain the heat exchanger. If water freezes inside the unit, the titanium heat exchanger can be damaged, and that damage is not covered by the warranty. AFI tip: in Quebec, winterize the heat pump no later than when you close the pool.

1. Stop and switch offStop the pool's water circulation, then switch off the heat pump's breaker.
2. Open the fittingsUnscrew the unit's water inlet and outlet fittings.
3. Dry the heat exchangerVacuum the water out through the bottom line with a shop vacuum, or blow it out through the top line.
4. Antifreeze (optional)Using a funnel, pour antifreeze into the top line until it comes out of the bottom one. Plug the bottom line with an expansion plug, finish filling from the top, then plug the top line. AFI tip: use antifreeze designed for pools, never automotive antifreeze.
5. CoverPut a cover over the unit, leaving room for a little air to circulate.
Coil maintenanceClean it with clean water or a household detergent, never with gasoline or thinner.

Frequently asked questions

What size pool can it heat?Moov specifies a maximum volume of 68,000 L (18,000 US gal). That is a maximum: the manufacturer points out that performance varies with the climate, the use of a solar cover and the target temperature, and recommends having a specialist confirm the choice of model. The closer your pool is to that volume, the more worthwhile it is to call us before ordering.
MI500, MI650X or MI900: which one should I choose? The MI650X is the mid-size model. The MI500 (46,000 BTU/h certified, up to 52,000 L according to Moov) only needs a 20 A breaker. The MI900 (82,000 BTU/h, up to 105,000 L) requires the same 30 A breaker as the MI650X, but it is larger (1,092 × 419 × 958 mm). If your pool has no solar cover, or if you want to heat early in the spring and late in the fall, the next size up gives you more headroom.
Why “65,000 BTU” in the name and 62,000 BTU/h in the specs?“65,000 BTU” is the commercial size designation. The capacity shown here is the value certified by AHRI under the AHRI 1160 standard, with air and water at 26.7 °C and 80% humidity: 62,000 BTU/h. That is the value to use when comparing AHRI-certified heat pumps with one another.
Is it compatible with a saltwater pool? Its heat exchanger is titanium, but Moov does not publish any salinity limit. The manufacturer's installation diagram places the water treatment, and therefore the salt chlorine generator, after the heat pump, just before the return to the pool: follow that order. For a saltwater pool, call us before ordering.
Is it noisy? The manufacturer specifies a sound level of 50 dB(A) or less, measured at 3 m (10 ft). Silence mode, which can be turned on remotely in the app, is for times when quiet matters. Since the fan blows horizontally, point the air outlet away from the house, the neighbours or the patio.
How much does it cost to run?It depends on the pool volume, the weather, the target temperature and whether you use a solar cover, so we do not quote a figure. A few benchmarks from the manufacturer: power input ranges from 0.56 to 3.0 kW (air and water at 26.7 °C), and a COP of 5.7 means about 5.7 kWh of heat for 1 kWh of electricity. Moov claims 30 to 50% seasonal savings compared with a traditional heat pump, and recommends keeping a cover on the pool during the heating season.
How late into the fall can I heat the pool? The manufacturer only guarantees efficiency with air between 0 and 43 °C, and capacity drops as the air cools: at 10 °C (63% humidity), it is 27,000 BTU/h. Defrost is automatic. However, Moov asks that you switch off the power and drain the unit as soon as the air drops below 3 °C, so the heating season ends before the first frosts.

Installation and operating manual (PDF, English and French)

This manual (2024 edition) covers several models in the range: the data for this model is in the MI(C)650X column. Its French version contains translation errors. For example, it says the product “perd sa garantie suite à la première installation” (loses its warranty following the first installation), when it should be understood that the warranty applies only to the first installation. In the French table, the “Puissance thermique” (thermal output) row actually gives the electrical power input (0.56 to 3.0 kW for this model). In the Wi-Fi section, the app is presented under the name Fairland; Moov now offers the Moov Pool app. If in doubt, rely on the English version or call us.
